Anthropomorphic Sketches

For this assignment I had to create an anthropomorphic character which is basically a combination of an animal & humanoid. This particular exercise asked for an anthropomorphic character of the amphibian variety.

Phyllomedusa Bicolor

For this exercise I selected a particular strain of Phyllomedusa bicolor which is a tree frog indigenous to the Amazon basin. The one I selected was the frog shown above. This particular frog has hallucinogenic properties. This gave me the idea for a frog who is "trippin" getting high on his own supply.

Trippy Toad

This is the initial sketch that I made using the graphics tablet.

This is the image after I have added some colour, I also wanted to show that the frog was under the influence so I put a psychedelic swirl in the eye of the frog and gave it a purple background.

Personally I feel I could have done a lot better on this picture, I could of added more detail and made the mood of the whole image meld together better. I think I could of made better use of the shadows and the lighting especially around the t shirt. The parts of the piece that I like are how the eye came out as well as the underbelly of the frog which I wanted to look like the reference image.

This is an idea that I had for this assignment and decided to do it as a side project.

Skull Dome

This is the model that I created for my battle arena, it is a Terra formed skull and the idea behind it was that it would open up to challengers. The top half of the skull will levitate using dark magic.

Blocks

During my free time I decided to try my hand at creating some tower blocks because I like the brutal dystopian vibe that they give off e.g. the setting for the film "Attack the Block".

Initially i wanted to use them for my game walk-through but my ideas changed so Ill save them for later.

Here are some of the pieces that I created

Weapon Idea

For this project I had to come up with an idea for a bladed weapon and the first thing that came to my mind was a berserker sword with a 9mm pistol as it's hilt.
This is a quick sketch that I made trying to put my ideas on paper. I think I got excited and added too much details to the gun section which makes it look like a toy, also the width of the gun in the sketch makes it look unbalanced and unrealistic, these are areas that I will fix when I'm actually making it in Maya.

This is the finished product rendered in maya. although i am pleased with the way that certain segments came out such as the arrows on the blade, I feel it could have used more detail on the actual shaft of the pistol to make it look more realistic instead of blocky. It could also have done with a proper metal texture for the blade instead of a simple silver blinn.

Perspective & Vanishing Points

Perspective is an essential in any artist's arsenal as it is a skill that helps the artist to depict 3D objects in a 2D plane using parallel lines. without perspective you wouldn't be able to differentiate a 2d object from a 3D one. When these parallel lines converge; that point is called the vanishing point.

This is my take on perspective and vanishing points: This is a sketch I did of a highway from the walking dead using the principles of perspective.

Life Drawing Sessions

Life Drawing is a key skill that any concept artist needs in their arsenal as it helps in the development in their skills when it comes to drawing humanoids as well as the positions that they might require to draw them in order the objects they will have to interact with.

For this session we where required to draw this lady using chalk, I personally tried to smudge the image on the left in order to give it more definition but I think I messed it up as it is harder to control the smudge than when using a pencil., The middle image is a continuous line drawing whch I found out is one of my weak points and I need to work on it.

More sketches using chalk, this time of a male model taking different positions and I have to draw him from my perspective.

This piece was initially started by me all the way down to the hip of the model and then as part of the exercise we had to swap with the person next to us and they would complete it; my partner was also the 1 who added the horns trying to be funny.

For this session I had to draw another male model from my perspective as he changed poses using chalk.

Then I had to try and sketch a sort of storyboard as he walked around the room, I am really disappointed by this piece even though it was short notice ill try and work on it in the future.

These 2 pieces required us to try and give off a an old school negative effect using the chalk to blacken the background. The 1st 1 used a rubber to remove the parts I wanted while the 2nd used white chalk. I prefer to use the white chalk as it allowed me to leave effects such as a 3D look  to the models arm seen above.

This is one of my favourite pieces that I have created during life drawing. I used a pencil to make this drawing and the rough lines make a simple pose that the model was making give off a vibe of broodig and pain for some reason.

These sketches in the session were made using a pen, I don't think they came out bad but i believe I could have done better when it came to defining facial features.

Another thing that I like about positiong different poses in parts of the sheet when drawing is that sometimes they come together and look like a picture. For instance the piece above sort of looks like a wealthy man in a barthrobe is about to get stabbed in the back and someone sees sort of like Ceasar.

Battle Arena

Mood Board

Battle Ring

Arena Environment

This is a copy that I made after my previous version messed up after Maya decided to shutdown on itself when I tried to render, after which I decided to take on some of the constructive criticism that I received earlier and change up the way that the edges look because they did not look natural before when it was all pointed out.

Although I haven't included this part yet, I want the finished product to resemble something like this.
